Adjectives in Armenian are words that describe or modify nouns. Unlike in many other languages, Armenian adjectives do not change form to agree with the gender or number of the noun they modify, making them relatively straightforward to use once you understand the basic rules.
In this lesson, we'll explore how adjectives work in Armenian, including their placement in sentences, comparative and superlative forms, and special types of adjectives.
In Armenian, adjectives typically come before the noun they modify. This is similar to English and different from French, where adjectives often follow the noun.

Unlike in many European languages, Armenian adjectives do not change form to match the gender, number, or case of the noun they modify. They remain invariable regardless of the noun they describe.

When adjectives function as predicates (after the verb 'to be'), they remain in their basic form.
Տունը մեծ է։
Tunə mets e.
La maison est grande.
The adjective մեծ (big) functions as a predicate after the verb 'to be' (է).
Գրքերը հետաքրքիր են։
Grkerə hetakrkir en.
Les livres sont intéressants.
The adjective հետաքրքիր (interesting) functions as a predicate with the plural form of 'to be' (են).
When multiple adjectives modify a single noun, they are typically placed in the following order: opinion, size, age, shape, color, origin, material, purpose. This is similar to the order in English.

The adjectives are ordered as: opinion (գեղեցիկ/beautiful), size (մեծ/big), color (կարմիր/red).

The adjectives are ordered as: age (հին/old), material (փայտե/wooden).
To form the comparative degree (more/less) in Armenian, you use the word 'ավելի' (aveli) for 'more' and 'պակաս' (pakas) for 'less' before the adjective. The word 'քան' (kan) is used for 'than'.
Այս տունն ավելի մեծ է, քան այն մեկը։
Ays tunn aveli mets e, kan ayn mekə.
Cette maison est plus grande que celle-là.
The comparative is formed with ավելի (more) + the adjective մեծ (big) + քան (than).
Նա պակաս բարձրահասակ է, քան իր եղբայրը։
Na pakas bardzrahasak e, kan ir yeghbayrə.
Il/Elle est moins grand(e) que son frère.
The comparative is formed with պակաս (less) + the adjective բարձրահասակ (tall) + քան (than).
To form the superlative degree (most/least) in Armenian, you use the word 'ամենա-' (amena-) as a prefix for 'most' or the phrase 'ամենից պակաս' (amenits pakas) for 'least'.
Սա ամենագեղեցիկ տունն է քաղաքում։
Sa amenageghetik tunn e kaghakum.
C'est la plus belle maison de la ville.
The superlative is formed with the prefix ամենա- (most) + the adjective գեղեցիկ (beautiful).
Սա ամենից պակաս հետաքրքիր գիրքն է։
Sa amenits pakas hetakrkir girkn e.
C'est le livre le moins intéressant.
The superlative is formed with the phrase ամենից պակաս (least) + the adjective հետաքրքիր (interesting).
Armenian has several suffixes that can be added to nouns to create adjectives. Some common ones include -ային (-ayin), -ական (-akan), and -ոտ (-ot).
գիտություն (science) → գիտական (scientific)
gitutyun → gitakan
science → scientifique
The suffix -ական (-akan) is added to the noun գիտություն (science) to form the adjective գիտական (scientific).
Հայաստան (Armenia) → հայաստանյան (Armenian)
Hayastan → hayastanyan
Arménie → arménien
The suffix -յան (-yan) is added to the noun Հայաստան (Armenia) to form the adjective հայաստանյան (Armenian).
աղ (salt) → աղոտ (salty)
agh → aghot
sel → salé
The suffix -ոտ (-ot) is added to the noun աղ (salt) to form the adjective աղոտ (salty).

Note: Many color adjectives in Armenian end with -գույն (-guyn), which literally means "color." For example, վարդագույն (vardaguyn) literally means "rose-colored."
